I teach secular meditation to people who are fairly sure it will not work for them. That scepticism is useful and I do not try to argue anyone out of it. What I offer is a practice with no metaphysics attached: attention, a place to put it, and a method for coming back when it wanders, which it will, constantly, and that is not failure. Most people arrive believing they are uniquely bad at this. Nobody is uniquely bad at this. Sessions are short by design. Ten focused minutes you actually do beats forty minutes you resent and abandon by week three. I would rather build something small that survives contact with a difficult week.
